#61 | Cmdr. Cyrious on burying the hatchet

Cmdr. Cyrious is a long-time Planetside 2 content creator and community leader. After co-casting Outfit Wars in early 2021, he stepped up as community organizer for the Late Shift's invasion of Planetside 2. The events successfully showed thousands of viewers fun Planetside experiences, but weren't without their critics.

In this podcast, Cyrious discusses the figures and forces behind Outfit Wars Alpha 3's infamous double-teaming, how a handful of bad eggs turned the Late Shift's streaming success sour, and how it all turned two creators against each other.

Oh, and Oshur. That too.

#56 | Gamers Are Wrong About New World

Many have ventured into New World, but it seems few have found the salvation they seek. Weak quests they say! Lack of narrative moments they say! New World is built on a foundation of lies, and there is nothing of note to be found there they say!

I say they are wrong.

#55 | Gaming on ADHD

New World has been released, and has already overtaken Cyberpunk 2077 with the fourth highest player peak ever on Steam, now trailing only DOTA 2, CSGO, and PUBG.

And I'm one of those players.

Today I'm taking a moment to reflect not on New World itself, but on the effect it has had on me and my ADHD. I've learned a lot about the disorder since my diagnosis in early 2020. Roughly 5% of children and adults suffer from it. I'd bet that, among my fellow adventurers, the percentage is quite a bit higher.

#54 | WoW Killer

New World launches today, but is it a WoW Killer? For that matter, what is a WoW killer?

Ask social media, most would suggest it's Blizzard itself,

ask a designer, even an armchair one, it's a game with better design,

ask one who cherished WoW as a child, it's an experience that takes them back,

but if you ask me, I say it's the next cultural revolution in geekdom.

And it probably looks nothing like an MMORPG.

#53 | Melderon on quitting WoW content, recapturing childhood, and moving on

After creating World of Warcraft Classic content for 5 years, Melderon is calling it quits. He is a geneticist, research scientist, and guild leader.

In this talk, Melderon explains why Burning Crusade is the best version of World of Warcraft, why Vanilla captures general interest in a way that no other expansion can, and answers the question: was anyone able to relive their childhood by playing WoW classic? Also discussed: the revelations of misogyny within Blizzard, and the sickening way we treat each other online.

#52 | Nostalgia & Violence: The Quest for Identity in Video Game

Games are dramatizations of typical and accepted types of violence within the wider world, or so Marshall McLuhan would have us believe. McLuhan, the philosopher of media who coined the expression "the medium is the message", predicted the world wide web almost 30 years before it was invented. McLuhan contended that nostalgia and violence are powerful methods of forming identity, identities which we tend to merge "at the speed of light".

#51 | Enders on Battlefield 5 frustration, skilled gunplay in FPS, & casuals vs. tryhards

A competitive Battlefield 5 player-streamer, Enders strives to be the best at everything he does including playing the violin, accounting, streaming, and (of course) killing it in first-person shooters.

In this talk, Enders explains how Battlefield 5's gunplay mechanics frustrate good players. He shines light on his drive for excellence, and surfaces some of his worst culture clashes with nay-sayers.

We come for the games, we stay for the people

I’ve been gaming for twenty years, and I’m here to talk with the industry’s bravehearted about what lies beneath — the human struggle for growth, self efficacy, and connection. So many of us were told these things are unattainable through gaming. But I believe we can find success, self-expression, and real-life connections, not despite our gaming passions, but because of what they have to teach us about ourselves.

…and for their stories.

At their core, games are made by people for people. The podcast aims to shine light on gaming thought leaders, less for the games they play and produce than for their exceptional stories, which are a collection of teachable moments we need to hear. The podcasts are raw, real, and recorded live because we find strength in shared struggles, inspiration in expression, courage in connection, and because we all deserve that kind of authenticity.

Join the conversation!

Questions, comments, or just curious? Introduce yourself! I love new thoughts and meeting the people who have them.
